Nance Fleming is a Toronto photographer and short story writer raised in the East Coast maritime tradition of music and storytelling. Her parents hail from Prince Edward Island and weekly ceilidhs with family and friends were part of the fabric of her childhood growing up: her mother sang and played guitar, her father was an old-school storyteller. Nance’s appetite for narrative began as an observer to these gatherings, watching the people who filled the space and sang and told the stories. Her "ear" for language and story led her to a degree in English Literature and the writing of short fiction, which eventually, and inevitably, seeped into her photography. And while her photography interest is varied, her "eye" for storytelling inclines her to seek out narrative when behind the lens; that intention is most evident in her street photography. In those moments of fortuity, when inspiration, observation, and narrative elements align, she hopes her images achieve the adage, "Every picture tells a story, don't it?"
"When I was a kid, I always wished I had one of those rings or cloaks that made you invisible. Then I realized years later, I am invisible behind a camera. I am a camera."  Jill Freedman
